New Gods 1977

The first time I ever stumbled across Jack Kirby's "New Gods" was in 1977. I didn't even know the 4th World existed, but I picked up the comic anyway. At the tender age of 13, I thought these were some of the coolest characters I'd ever seen. Little did I know that the redesigned costume for Orion would cause a huge backlash and despite some good interior art by Don Newton, this, combined with the financial troubles DC was having would cause the series to be cancelled. Pictured here are the three characters around whom this 2nd New Gods plot arc (issues 12- 19) mostly revolved around, Lightray, the redesigned Orion and newly introduced Jezebelle.

The next time the New Gods would appear, Orion would be back in his original costume and Jezebelle would be nowhere to be found. This 1977 era remains my favorite for these characters design-wise, so that's what I chose to represent.
